It was a tough decision, so many of you submitted such great guesses...but WE HAVE A WINNER!! CONGRATULATIONS TO Kristy McCaw of California, the winner of the very first Listie Mystery Contest (see the June/July item on the contest page)! Kristy's entry was quite creative:

"You're all wrong thats the super secret "Crooked Mechanic Award"
Notice how there is no label, name, or insignia. A mechanic receives
this prestigious honor for billing the most customers for the least
amount of actual work done.

My Uncle Lelaf won it in June 1984 for having the most most repeat
customers-- he would "fix three problems and leave 'em one for the
road." Good old Uncle Lelaf, always left 'em wanting more.

It's actually really cool trophy, silver-plated nickel-- don't hold it
too long or it'll turn your palms green--. The two prongs at the top
are indicative of the balance between "service and serve us" the motto
of most mechanics" and that hole in the bottom is symbolic of the hole
in their customer's wallets.

Seriously though, what a find! I bet it would be worth a lot of money
if it wasn't missing that little piece of your alternator to hold it
erect that was collected when your car was serviced last Tuesday--
whoops!"

So Kristy will be receiving her very own Listasaurus.com T-Shirt, along with the Super Secret "Crooked Mechanic Award" mystery item.

We'd also like to give honorable mention to the following entries:

The item in question does appear to be one of many obscure possibilities, however it was used to do all these things. It used to belong to an accident prone train engineer who had his hand ran over twice in two identical mishaps. One involved his real hand, and the second involved his prosthetic hook. The hook faired much better from the crushing weight of the train, and in fact, became more useful at such things as opening letters. Honest

It's the newest bluetooth cellphone headset from motorola. It is based on an early design from Leonardo Da Vinci. It featues a sleek design with an ergonomic curve that contours to any ear. The microphone is hidden in a small hole on the end to protect it from rain for chatters that don't care what the weather is like. Special features include an areodynamic notch which is supposed to decrease wind resistance while talking on the cell phone and walking up and down isles at Walmart. The power source is revolutionary because it runs off the brainwaves of drivers who talk on their cellphones while driving. The sad part is the drivers talking on their cellphones while driving produce very little brainwaves, so the product was quickly pulled from shelves.

It's the sickle used in the Fresno production of "Dwarf Children on the Corn, the Musical," starring Vern Troyer and Gary Coleman as Malakai.

Great stuff everyone!!

Congrats again, Kristy!
